Three films close the summer at Cinematheque

by Anthony Glassman

Cleveland-The Cinematheque, northeast Ohio's premier destination for fans of independent and foreign films as well as director and genre retrospectives, closes out the summer with three queer films between now and Labor Day.

The first motion picture is Lianna, a 1983 lesbian romance by director John Sayles, whose work is the subject of the Cinematheque's retrospective this month.

The film deals with Lianna's (Linda Griffiths) realization that she is a lesbian. Unfortunately for her, she is married to a domineering film professor who browbeats her and their two children, not to mention his habit of cavorting with coeds.

Lianna takes a class in child psychology, and becomes involved romantically with her professor, Ruth. Ruth does not want to take advantage of Lianna's attraction to authority figures as her husband has, so she absents herself from the situation, leaving Lianna to find her own way in the new world into which she has thrust herself.

Lianna plays Sunday, August 11 at 7 pm. On Thursday, August 15 and Sunday, August 18 at 7 and 9 pm respectively, the Cinematheque will play the Brazilian/German/Italian co-production Princesa, directed by Henrique Goldman.

The 2001 Strand release deals with Fernando, a 19-year-old transsexual who travels to Italy from Brazil and starts turning tricks to finance gender reassignment surgery.

In Milan, she becomes Princesa, the mysterious woman that men desire. Gianni, a

married businessman, finds himself falling in love with her, but, because it's a film and such things happen in films, things fall apart.

Finally, the Cinematheque wraps up its schedule on Sunday, September 1 with Happy Together, Hong Kong director Wong KarWai's stylish 1997 look at the intermittent love affair of two gay expatriates living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As they drift apart, come back together and drift apart again, Wong Kar-Wai spins a tale of loss and regret that mirrors the handover of Hong Kong to the Chinese by the British shortly after the film came out.

All films are shown at the Cleveland Cinematheque inside the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11141 East Boulevard. Admission is $7, $4 for Cinematheque members. For more information, call 216-421-7450, or visit their web site at www.cia.edu/cinematheque.
